Some weekends are ordinary, others are pure magic. This recent weekend fell firmly into the latter category: an extraordinary blend of entertainment, nostalgia, and adventure. From the dazzling spectacle of MJ the Musical to the timeless charm of a steam-hauled rail journey across the British countryside, it was a weekend of contrasts and delights.

Saturday: A Night in London’s Theatreland
The city was alive with its usual hum of excitement as we made our way to the theatre for an evening with MJ the Musical. Admittedly, being neither an avid fan of Michael Jackson nor entirely convinced of the show’s premise, I approached the experience with mild scepticism. But as soon as the curtain rose, it was clear I had underestimated what was in store.
The production was nothing short of mesmerising. The choreography, the iconic moves, and the pulsating energy of Jackson’s most famous songs created an electrifying atmosphere. The performers embodied the essence of MJ, delivering a show that was as emotionally engaging as it was technically flawless. By the time the final number had played out, my earlier doubts had melted away. This was one of the best theatre performances I had ever seen.
Sunday: A Journey Back in Time
If Saturday was all about the glitz and glamour of the stage, Sunday was a deep dive into nostalgia, history, and the sheer romance of steam travel. The day began at London Kings Cross, where we arrived early in the morning to board our special train. Waiting proudly at the front was a magnificent steam engine, poised to take us on a journey to Norfolk.
Stepping into the carriages was like entering a world untouched by time. White linen tablecloths, fresh flowers, and an elegantly set breakfast table welcomed us into an atmosphere of refined travel—a stark contrast to the rushed commutes of modern trains. As the locomotive slowly pulled out of Kings Cross, the soft chug of the engine and intermittent wafts of steam transported us to a bygone era.
Breakfast was a delight. Served freshly from the train’s dedicated kitchen car, we enjoyed hearty portions of porridge, toast, and a full English breakfast, accompanied by piping-hot tea and coffee, a meal reminiscent of the golden age of railway dining.
Arriving in Norwich, the train reversed direction and carried us toward Great Yarmouth, a seaside town with a nostalgic charm all its own. While many passengers headed for Pleasure Beach or explored the local shops, we ventured towards Caister-on-Sea, meeting friends for a tranquil stroll along the shoreline with their dogs. The sea air, the sound of waves lapping against the shore, and the companionship made for an idyllic few hours.
The return journey was just as enchanting. As evening fell, the catering team exceeded expectations once again, serving a freshly prepared four-course dinner that elevated the journey from memorable to exceptional.
Scenic Beauty & Unforgettable Moments
The scenery throughout the journey was breathtaking. As we departed the suburbs of London, the landscape gradually shifted to rolling fields dotted with poppies in full bloom. The Norfolk Broads sparkled under the sun, its iconic wind pumps standing tall on the banks of the rivers, adding to the picturesque beauty.
As we finally rolled back into Kings Cross, there was a quiet moment of reflection. It had been a weekend of contrasts. Urban excitement and rural serenity, and one that would be cherished for years to come.
