A reminder that luxury isn’t frivolous - it’s nourishment for the spirit
Every so often, life presents the perfect excuse to indulge. Not out of extravagance, but out of appreciation for beauty, for craftsmanship, for moments that lift you out of the everyday. The other day, I gave myself that gift by stepping aboard the British Pullman for a circular tour of Kent, and it was nothing short of magical.
Stepping Into a World of Vintage Glamour
The moment you board, the modern world fades. The vintage carriages, each restored with obsessive love, feel like a portal to the golden age of travel. Polished marquetry, plush armchairs, art‑deco lamps - everything whispers elegance.
The waiters, dressed in immaculate uniforms, move with a kind of effortless choreography. Silver service, crisp linens, quiet professionalism, it’s hospitality elevated to an art form.
And on some journeys, the British Pullman is even pulled by a steam locomotive, adding a layer of nostalgia that makes the whole experience feel like a living piece of history.
Champagne, Fine Dining, and the Luxury of Time
Before the train even eased out of the station, a glass of champagne appeared in my hand. Cold, crisp, celebratory. It set the tone beautifully.
Then came the courses, each one a small masterpiece. Seasonal ingredients, rich flavours, and presentation that made you pause before taking the first bite. All while the Kent countryside drifted past the window like a moving painting. It’s rare to feel so thoroughly looked after, and rarer still to have time slow down in such a delicious way.

Beyond Kent: Journeys That Inspire
The British Pullman isn’t just about the route, it’s about the experience. And there are so many to choose from:
Bath – Roman baths, Georgian crescents, and a city that feels like a warm embrace
York – medieval charm, winding lanes, and the majestic Minster
Chatsworth House – grandeur, gardens, and one of England’s most beloved stately homes
Other curated journeys – each one blending scenery, storytelling, and exquisite dining
Every destination becomes extraordinary when the journey itself is part of the magic.
Treating Yourself Matters
It’s easy to postpone indulgence. To be sensible. To wait for the “right time.” But days like this remind you that treating yourself isn’t about luxury, it’s about joy, presence, and giving yourself permission to savour life.
I so enjoyed the experience, the wine and the friends I made on the train that I am off to Bath Spa in March!
And if this kind of experience is calling your name, Avocet Holidays can arrange the entire British Pullman journey for you. From choosing the perfect route to ensuring every detail is seamless, it’s the kind of treat that stays with you long after the train pulls back into the station.
